Accepted Identifiers and Catalogs

NStED maintains its own list of cross-identifications for every star in the NStED database. To search on a single star, enter the star name in the search box. If the star name is recognized by NStED, the user is taken directly to the NStED Overview page for that star.

If the user enters the name of star that has been identified by NStED as being part of a multiple system, the user will be given the choice to select between either component of the system. For example, if a user enters 83 Leo, NStED returns the list of stellar components (83 Leo A, 83 Leo B) and asks the user to chose the appropriate stellar component.

If a user enters a name that is not recognized by NStED, it is possible that the user has used an alias which is unknown to NStED but is known to SIMBAD. The user input is passed to SIMBAD and NED to search for additional aliases which may be recognized by NStED.

If no SIMBAD or NED alias is found, the user is notified that the input is not recognized by NStED, SIMBAD or NED.

If the input is recognized by SIMBAD, the user is given a list of SIMBAD aliases. The alias list is matched against the NStED alias list to search for an NStED entry. The full SIMBAD-NStED matching is displayed to allow the user to determine if the correct star has been identified. If multiple NStED sources are associated with a given SIMBAD alias, the multiple matches are also shown. The NStED object column provides a direct link to all matched entries in NStED.

For example, HD 41004 is in NStED, but the alias GSC 08092-00538 is not recognized by NStED. Entering GSC 08092-00538 into NStED triggers a query to SIMBAD for a list of additional aliases. The aliases are matched to aliases recognized by NStED. In the case of HD 41004, there is an A and B component which is also indicated in the matched results. If the input is recognized by SIMBAD, a direct link to the SIMBAD entry is provided.

If the alias is recognized by SIMBAD but is classified as a non-Galactic object, a link to the NED entry is also provided. (example: M 31).

In the instructions above

• N = an integer digit (0-9).
• HH = an integer number of hours (00-23).
• MM = an integer number of minutes (00-59).
• m = fraction of a minute (0-9), e.g., MMm = 217 corresponds to 21.7 minutes.
• SSSS or SSS = seconds plus fraction of second (0000-5999 or 000-599), e.g., SSSS = 2248 corresponds to 22.48 seconds.
• DD = integer number of degrees (00-89).
• YYYY = integer number of years (2000-2099).
• A = a letter of the (English) alphabet (A-Z or a-z).
• ggg = The full Greek letter (e.g., alpha, beta) or the 3 English letter abbreviation of Greek letters (e.g., alf, bet). For the Greek letters mu and nu, please repeat the last character (muu, nuu) to enforce a three character abbreviation.
• s = "+" or "-" sign.
• CON = Three letter abbreviation of constellation name (e.g., TAU, AND).

All other letters are entered as is. Note also that

• Italicized = an instruction
• Anything written in [square brackets] may or may not be part of a query.
• Leading zeros (0s) may be omitted
• NStED is not case-sensitive

Notes

Regarding Durchmusterung catalogs: NStED uses the same designations as published in the original Durchmusterung catalogs. That is, the identifiers BD, CD, CPD, SD are not interchangeable. In the same spirit, NStED also does not recognize the generic Durchmusterung (DM) identifier
